Two questions for you:
1) Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series--is it worth it? I started reading "City of Bones" (or whichever one's the first one) a month or so ago and still haven't finished it. Yeah. I was halfway through when I switched to another book, and I still haven't found the motivation to pick it back up. So, all you who've read it, should I finish it? Is it worth my time, or should I just give up and move on to greener pastures?
2) I want to read a graphic novel. I've never read one before, so this will be uncharted territory. Since I don't know anything about them, I don't even know which is a good one to start with. This might be revealing my complete and total ignorance on the subject, but aren't some graphic novels kinda like anime? Well, I don't actually like anime, so if you could steer me to some that aren't like that, I would appreciate it. So, does anyone have any graphic novels to suggest?
Read and finish it, and then decide. I didn't really care for the Mortal Instruments series, but then I found the Clockwork XXX series (which has another name) but I really enjoyed that. Some people love it to pieces.
ReplyDeleteEr, going down your fave books list, I'm not sure what to say. The graphic novels I read are more horror-y, not like you read. But Anya's Ghost is a nice little paranormal friendship tale you might enjoy. I'll get back to you on that if I remember.
I've heard good things about the Clockwork series, so I'm hoping I'll like that one better. Good to know that you liked it better than Mortal Instruments.
DeleteThanks for the graphic novel suggestion. I'm not opposed to "horror-y" I guess, as long as it's not something that will make me scared to sleep at night :)
I'm not going to be much help with your TMI question because I did the exact same thing. I ended up buying all the books so far for $1 each but that still hasn't motivated me. As for graphic novels, are you looking at American graphic novels or manga? More questions than answers....
ReplyDeleteMan, that's sweet that you got them for a dollar!
DeleteI'm not kidding when I say I don't know anything about graphic novels. Manga is the Japanese kind, right? Knowing myself, I might like the American graphic novels better, but that doesn't mean I'm totally discounting manga. Basically, I think I'm just looking for a good graphic novel to introduce me to the genre.
I know huh! At a yard sale. Best day ever.
DeleteTry something America if you think you'll be more comfortable with it. The only thing is, graphic novels tend to be a lot about super heroes and I'm not sure that's your thing Karen. If you ever want to try manga let me know!
I have the same problem with the Mortal Instruments. I did finish book 1 and I liked it a lot, but I'm stuck halfway through book 2. I don't know if it's worth it to continue.
ReplyDeleteAs far as graphic novels, I would suggest Ultimate X-Men Vol. 1 if you like superheroes. The Ultimate series is very addicting and a great place to start if you've never read any Marvel comics before.
I'm not usually big on superheroes, but I'm definitely willing to give it a shot--especially if it's addicting!
DeleteHmm. I really liked the MI series but I know a lot of people don't so really it's hard to say. I do think that it should have ended at book 3 though. It's starting to become a jumbled mess because the author doesn't know she should stop when she's ahead O_O
ReplyDeleteI hate it when an author drags on a series! I think unless the author is planning on a certain number of books from the very beginning, things get too confusing as the series progresses. Good to know you like MI, though.
DeleteI haven't read the Mortal Instruments, and am wondering the same thing... I do really like the Clockwork books though, which are prequels.
ReplyDeleteI have only ever read one graphic novel, but I really liked it -- Tina's Mouth by Keshni Kashyap. It was quick and light but I thought it was pretty witty.
I remember you saying you liked the clockwork series, so I think I'm still going to give that a shot.
DeleteAnd thanks for the suggestion--I definitely appreciate witty books!
Anime are the cartoons. What you are thinking about is manga, which are just Japanese graphic novels or comics. What reasons don’t you like anime/manga? Is it just the style of the art or more the plot? You might see the anime/manga style of art in an American graphic novel because the two cultures are pretty heavily mixed now. I suggest you just browse the graphic novel section at your local book store and see if anything jumps out at you.
ReplyDeletePopular graphic novels include the Bone series written by Jeff Smith and the Sandman series written by Neil Gaiman. Superhero graphic novels; Batman, Superman etc., are pretty common. If you’ve ever had an interest in comics than those are like big beefed up comic books and are pretty fun to read. The Fables series by Bill Willingham is popular. The Walking Dead, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 300, Sin City etc. all have graphic novels out. Otherwise, graphic novels are just as varied as regular books and you’ll just have to find your favorites.
